Business Central roadmap
Microsoft is heavily invested in Dynamics 365 Business Central and for its continual enhancement and support. Whether you have Business Central online or on-premise, Microsoft is committed to improving the system and releases two waves of new features and enhancements a year. In these releases, Microsoft focuses on:
- Modernizing financial and operations processes
- Making it easier to manage accounting tasks for multiple companies
- Expanding inventory and warehouse scenarios
- Enabling more customizations without code
- Enhancing integrations with the Power Platform
Business Central online
Business Central online is governed by Microsoft’s Modern Lifecycle policy. Under this policy, Microsoft offers continuous support and servicing. Microsoft will release two waves of changes and updates for Business Central each year that include hotfixes, feature updates, and tax updates. To remain current and to continue to receive support, customers are required to apply the latest update. Microsoft starts scheduling automatic upgrades to customer environments starting a week after the release is made available. Customers then have the option to reschedule the update for any time within a 30-day window after the update is made available.
Microsoft partners support Business Central
Microsoft sells and supports Business Central through their partner network. Microsoft partners are the providers of technical support for Business Central and those partners can escalate issues to Microsoft if necessary. Microsoft sells and supports Business Central through their partner network. Business Central on-premise
The April 2019 release of Dynamics 365 Business Central on-premise is covered in the Fixed Lifecycle policy. Under this policy Microsoft provides mainstream support for 5 years which includes hotfixes and service packs. Extended support is available for an additional 5 years after mainstream support ends but only includes updates related to security vulnerabilities. After extended support, Microsoft will no longer support the system. Mainstream support will end for the April 2019 release of BC on October 10, 2023.
Versions of Dynamics 365 Business Central on-premises released in October 2019 or later are covered by the Modern Lifecycle Policy. Under this policy, Microsoft offers continual support and servicing, with two release waves a year that include bug fixes, new features, and the latest tax updates. To continue receiving support and updates from Microsoft, BC users must stay current as shown in the diagram to the right.
